the new year

a thought about viewing your new years resolution from a different angle...

during this time of the year we often find ourselves reflecting, looking back on the year and jotting down our resolutions for the new year. if youre like me, you start off with great enthusiasm and then get confronted with a little thing called "life" which inevitably gets in the way of what we set out to do. next things you know, youre at another new year looking back at how things went, feeling a bit discouraged and then you start the process over again- trying to convince yourself that you really mean it this year..sound familiar?

well maybe this year will be different if we just look at it from a different angle. and, it may be as simple as replacing the word resolution; because right from the start resolution can set a bit of a negative tone. it implies there are things to resolve-that some things may be wrong or not so right with us or with what we are doing. this year, lets use the word "intention" instead of "resolution". by definition, an intention is an aim or a plan; a decision to do or not to do something. with that, there is no predetermined tone. its whatever we intend it to be; hence it is much more positive.

so what are you intentions for 2013? what will your aim, plan or decision by for 2013? whatever it is, make a commitment to have the very best intentions each day for yourself and for those who are around you. when you do that, you are less likely to look back after a full year and feel discouraged.

some of my intentions:

1. i did not spend ONE day in 2012 in eating disorder treatment. in 2013, i intend to do the same.
2. spend more time with my family. they mean the world to me.
3. be kind to myself as much as possible.

  1. I love your intentions! Intentions is a much better word than resolutions. I have no doubt that all of them will come true.
